De l’art à l’architecture…
La dimension spatiale occupe une place prépondérante dans le travail d’Eliasson. Parmi ses principales explorations architecturales, on peut citer le Pavillon de la Serpentine Gallery conçu en 2007 avec l’architecte norvégien Kjetil Thorsen, ou encore, ses diverses interventions aux biennales de Venise. Récemment, il s’est illustré aux côtés de l’architecte Henning Larsen, avec lequel il a réalisé le Concert Hall Harpa de Reykjavik en Islande, l’un des cinq projets finalistes qui concourra pour le prix Mies van der Rohe 2013 en mai prochain.

…De l’architecture à la lumière
Les oeuvres d’Eliasson se distinguent également par l’intérêt qu’il porte à la perception sensorielle de phénomènes naturels au coeur d’un environnement urbain. La lumière notamment, est une récurrence. Sa fascination pour cet élément s’exprime dans plusieurs installations mondialement connues, telles que The Weather Project, oeuvre monumentale qui irradie en 2003 le Turbine Hall de la Tate Modern d’une lumière solaire artificiellement recréée. À travers son dernier projet, The Little Sun solar-powered lamp, développé en collaboration avec l’ingénieur Frederik Ottesen, Eliasson poursuit sa réflexion sur la lumière, en explorant des problématiques relatives à la pénurie et à l’inégale répartition de l’énergie dans le monde actuel.

Olafur Eliasson’s critically acclaimed artworks have appeared in major museums around the world since 1997. His latest project, developed with Frederik Ottesen, is the Little Sun solar-powered lamp, which responds to the unfair distribution of electric light in the world today. Eliasson’s talk, ‘It Works because We Try’, will address ‘the potential that lies in attempting to bridge the gap between the “thinking chair” and the “doing chair”. It is about non-dogmatic doing and non-dogmatic thinking.’
